Exam Retake Policies

Detailed below are the retake policies for Microsoft, Novell, Cisco, Comptia and Linux.

Microsoft

Microsoft has revised its policy for retaking exams to increase security. If you do not pass an exam the first time, you may retake it at any time. If you do not achieve a passing score a second time, you must wait at least 14 days to retake the exam a third time. A 14-day waiting period will be imposed for all subsequent exam retakes. If you have passed an exam, you cannot take it again. Beta exams may be taken only once.

Novell

Novell has established a testing policy to outline conditions under which a candidate may retake a Novell exam. By imposing a wait period between exam retakes, the candidate has limited exposure to exam items and is dissuaded from memorizing exam items.

In the event a candidate fails a Novell exam on his or her first attempt, Novell will not require any waiting period between the first and second attempt to pass the same Novell exam. However, before any candidate’s third or subsequent attempt to pass a Novell exam, the candidate shall be required to wait for a period of no less than thirty (30) calendar days from the date of the candidate’s last attempt to pass the same exam.

In the event a candidate passes a Novell exam, the candidate shall be required to wait a period of twelve (12) months before retaking the same Novell exam, unless Novell has changed the test objectives by revising the course related to that specific exam.

In the event it has been determined a candidate has violated Novell’s exam retake policy, the candidate may not be eligible to register or schedule a Novell exam for a minimum period of twelve (12) months from the date of such determination.

Any candidate determined to have violated Novell’s exam retake policy may be subject to the following:

1. Denial of Novell certification for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of such determination or
2. Revocation of Novell certification, if such certification had been previously granted to the candidate or
3. Revocation of all Novell certifications previously granted to candidate or
4. Ineligibility to receive any Novell certification for a minimum of twelve (12) months from the date of such determination or
5. Any other appropriate actions, including legal remedies, that Novell deems necessary or appropriate to enforce Novell’s exam retake policy.

Cisco

Cisco has a retake policy requiring candidates to wait a minimum of 72-hours before retaking the same exam. Currently, there is no limit to the number of times a candidate can take the same certification exam before passing it.Once a candidate passes a particular exam they are not allowed to retake an exam having the same exam number.

Comptia

The CompTIA retake policy was established to outline conditions under which a candidate may retake a CompTIA certification test.

CompTIA addresses the following in the scope of this document:

1. Retake policy in the event that a candidate fails a CompTIA certification test
2. Retake policy in the event that a candidate passes a CompTIA certification test
3. Retake policy in the event that it is determined that a candidate violated CompTIA's candidate conduct policy
4. Remedies for violating the retake policy
CompTIA beta certification examinations may only be taken one (1) time by each candidate.

IN THE EVENT THAT A CANDIDATE FAILS A COMPTIA CERTIFICATION TEST - RETAKE POLICY:

In the event that a candidate fails his or her first (1st) attempt to pass any CompTIA certification test, CompTIA does not require any waiting period between the first (1st) and second (2nd) attempt to pass that same CompTIA certification test. However, before any candidate's third (3rd) attempt or any subsequent attempt to pass any CompTIA certification test, such candidate shall be required to wait for a period of at least thirty (30) calendar days from the date of such candidate's last attempt to pass such test.

IN THE EVENT THAT A CANDIDATE PASSES A COMPTIA CERTIFICATION TEST - RETAKE POLICY:

In the event that any candidate passes any CompTIA certification test, such candidate shall be required to wait for a period of twelve (12) calendar months before retaking the same CompTIA certification test, unless CompTIA has changed the test objectives for such test.

IN THE EVENT THAT IT IS DETERMINED THAT A CANDIDATE HAS VIOLATED COMPTIA'S CANDIDATE CONDUCT POLICY - RETAKE POLICY:

If it is determined that a candidate has violated CompTIA's candidate conduct policy, such candidate may not be eligible to register and/or schedule any CompTIA certification test for a minimum period of twelve (12) calendar months from the date of such determination, if determined necessary or appropriate by CompTIA based upon the seriousness of the incident or violation.

Linux

(Revised 19-Apr-2004)
The LPI Board voted on a policy regarding the delay required between re-taking exams:
  • Anyone who takes an LPI exam once must wait one week before re-taking.
  • Anyone who takes an LPI exam a second (and subsequent) time must wait 90 days before re-taking.
  • Anyone who passes an LPI exam may not retake that exam for at least two years.
